The Brazilian Acai Berry Story

The acai berry finds its way back through history and reaches back through time in Amazonian storytelling. Hundreds of years ago, the native peoples of the Brazilian Amazon area had grown to such a large size that they had eaten all their stores of food and any other sources of food. The tribal chief knew something must be done, so he decreed that all newborn babies be killed. The chief's daughter by the name of Iaca later gives birth to a baby. Knowing favor can not be shown to any, the child is killed according to the chief's decree. The story says that Iaca grieved for her baby in her hut by herself for days. One day Iaca believes she hears a baby crying outside of her hut. When Iaca searches outside for the crying baby, she discovers a palm tree growing up from the earth and the tree is covered in fruit. Completely despaired by her lost baby, Iaca laid down under the tree's palms and bountiful fruit and died. The natives people found Iaca dead body the next day beneath the new tree with its fruit. The fruit relieved the tribe's hunger and replenished their energy. The chief removed his decree to kill newborn babies and named the fruit after his daughter Iaca. Acai is Iaca spelt backwards. With the acai fruit providing a source of food, the native peoples increased in size and prospered.

While other South American tribes were diminishing or completely dying off from European diseases brought by those that came with Columbus, the Brazilian tribe eating the acai fruit claim to have thrived during this time. It was not until the 1950's that doctors began to take notice of the acai berry. At this time they first discovered the health benefits of the acai fruit, but this knowledge fell by the wayside during the fifties and sixties due to the increased popularity of synthetic medications. In the 1980's, trucks with refrigeration made it possible to get the acai berry to Rio before going bad. In Rio the acai berry became very popular and has been used many different ways since then.

Later in the year 2000, the acai berry was finally making its way into the United States in frozen form. The acai deteriorates rapidly and must be packaged as a frozen product in order for anyone outside of theBrazilian Amazon to enjoyacai and redeem its benefits on the body. Becoming more popular all the time, research has begun again to determine the exact benefits for humans. Research has shown many great things, including cancer fightingor cardiovasculardisease fighting abilities andso many more.Acai has since been enjoyed for many, many years by the peoples of Brazil. In fact today,a common morning breakfast in Brazil is a bowl of acai with granola or other fruit. In the Untied States, acai is mostly seen in juices or other drinks, but has popped up in all kinds of areas including flavoring entrees. Thanks to an Indian girl's sorrow hundreds of years ago, all of us today have a beneficial fruit to eat.
